Going Green: Environmentally Friendly Fundraising
Did you know...? Paper accounts for 25 percent of landfill waste. That’s the largest of any single component. Paper production also accounts for over 40 percent of the world’s industrial wood harvest and is one of the largest consumers and polluters of fresh water.
The health and sustainability of our planet is rapidly becoming a major concern for many individuals – even for those who may support your organization. In fact, the Direct Marketing Association reports that donors are starting to frame expectations based on type and volume of communications they receive from organizations they support.
So how can your nonprofit get a little greener? Here are a few ways you can reduce waste and conserve energy while raising more funds.
Reduce Energy Costs: Energy costs in your office really add up. Reduce the energy you expend by replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, providing bins for recycling paper, bottles, cans, and cardboard, and turning off equipment, computers, and lights to prevent unnecessary energy consumption.
Save Trees by Going Online: Consider all the paper used for fundraising efforts – letters, envelopes, postcards, event invitations and reminders, press releases, newsletters. The list goes on and on. Eliminate or significantly reduce the paper you use by sending electronic communications and requesting that donors support you online.
Greener Printing: If you can’t reduce your paper use, seek eco-friendly options. Choose paper that is 100 percent post-consumer waste, processed chlorine free (PCF), uncoated, made by renewable energy sources (like wind or solar power), or is treeless (like hemp or kenaf). Use vegetable-based or soy inks which are lower in VOCs yet are still competitively priced. Avoid using bindings, adhesives, or foil stamps in packaging.
Support Eco-Friendly Businesses: Do business with vendors that are also kind to the environment. Supporting other eco-friendly organizations helps you, your supports, and most importantly Mother Earth.
Encourage Employee Awareness: Promote green initiatives by educating and involving your employees. Encourage public transportation and car-pooling, provide information on ways to conserve outside of the office (like buying energy-efficient vehicles and setting up compost bins), and motivate employees to generate new ways to conserve.
Promoting green practices not only makes your nonprofit look good, but it also serves to motivate others to do the same. Go green while you support your mission!
